The Allurion gastric balloon is an effective way to lose weight and is part of a comprehensive personalized treatment program. You will lose between 10 and 15% of your weight within 4 months. With “regular” weight loss, it takes you at least 1 to 2 years to do so – and that is not sustainable for most people (hence the well-known “yo-yo” effect). The combination of the gastric balloon and changes in diet and exercise provide permanent weight loss. After all, when you have lost so much weight, it is much easier to maintain your weight.
How does the Allurion gastric balloon work?
Placing an Allurion gastric balloon is quite easy. It is inserted through the mouth. You swallow a capsule in which the empty balloon is folded. Attached to the capsule is a thin tube. When the capsule is in your stomach, our doctor fills the balloon with liquid through the tube.
A second x-ray follows to verify that the balloon is filled and that placement is complete. Your doctor then gently removes the tube and you can get back on your feet. With the balloon in your stomach, you can eat less without feeling hungry.
After a period of 16 weeks, the top of the balloon dissolves automatically (a very clever invention), then the gastric balloon slowly deflates. The gastric balloon leaves the body naturally.

The gastric balloon is placed in the stomach and takes up about a third of the volume of your stomach. The balloon makes you feel satiated, so you eat less often and smaller portions.

Allurion gastric balloon treatment is not covered by your health insurance and falls under our Private Care treatments.
Gastric balloons are not covered by most health insurance companies. Often this is classified as cosmetic treatment, which puts them outside of health insurance. On rare occasions, some health insurance companies are willing to issue reimbursement from basic insurance, but this has not yet occurred at Allurion Clinic.
