Youth are getting fatter. Of 2 to 25-year-olds, 17 percent were overweight last year. An increase is seen especially in the young adult group. A quarter of young people between 18 and 25 were overweight. 7 percent were obese, according to figures from CBS in cooperation with RIVM.
In addition to age, origin, parents’ level of education, and whether they themselves are overweight also play a role. Among young people with origins outside Europe, obesity is most common. Children with low-educated parents are also more likely to be overweight than children with highly educated parents, as are children with at least one obese parent. Gender, in turn, plays no role: boys and girls are about equally likely to be overweight.
